Please Don't Bash an Entire State
I would like to suggest that we be kind to North Carolina progressives (who worked damned hard to fight this) and avoid stereotyping the entire state based on the Amendment One vote. 39% of North Carolina residents voted against it. I remember how depressed we Californians were over Prop 8 passing so I feel a sense of solidarity. Conservatives are everywhere, not just the Southern states.

I pointed out on FB last night that if that amendment was the only item being voted on, then a lot of people probably just stayed home & didn't vote.

People turn out for the big elections, so you get a more balanced vote.
The folks who vote in every single election are, unfortunately, the ones who tend to be the most conservative. Which goes a long way toward explaining the 2010 fiasco that has been taken as a "Republican Mandate!"

And I just went and looked up voter registration numbers for NC; the tallies I see reflect a 35% voter turnout. I don't know what the norm is for the state, though.

And there were a LOT of items to vote for-this was the primary election for the governor's and Lt. Gov's. race, for the House, and for the presidential primaries, both R and D.

I'm a QLDer (Queensland is the 'Bible Belt' of Australia; we've gifted wider Aus. and the world with Bob Katter, Wendy Francis, Ken Ham, etc), and every time someone bashes QLD and QLDers, I assume they're talking about all the things I hate here and I'm inclined to agree with them ("Yes, it sucks!") not feel upset ("You mean ME?!")

But of course, that being said, there are obviously tons of others who don't feel the same way, and I try not to make super general statements about any area for that reason.

Boo, homophobes, though. Boo!
