My divorcing friends are going through this stuff--one of the two has been really childish and fights constantly over what is "fair." While he is so busy fighting for what is fair for him, the child is the one who is going to suffer. What's sad is his own parents were like this (and are to this day bitter and hateful to each other). He hated it when they did it but he's going down the exact same road. He has eroded the good will of the other party with his behavior. She started out thinking they could be friends.

That's one of those one's I'd probably grab him by the ears and rattle him. You have to wonder if that even occurs to them that the person being most harmed by it is the child....

I've been lucky enough to not be too close to any divorced couples who acted this way.

Since the child is young, I think he believes that everything he says and does is going over the child's head. Thing is, they get body language and tone of voice at a young age, they get that there is tension between their parents, and they notice their parents are stressed out. Getting in that extra little dig is not worth making your child anxious. It's just not.
