What is Rape Culture?
What is rape culture? How is it defined? What does it look, sound, and feel like? This is the best description I've ever read.

Rape Culture 101

"Rape culture is the insistence on trying to distinguish between different kinds of rape via the use of terms like "gray rape" or "date rape." - (from the article)

. . .and let's not forget Whoopi's incredible and ignorant qualifier: "RAPE-rape".

Rape culture is where a straight man can never, EVER be wrong. Where if you perceive yourself being in a threatening relationship, you are either imagining it or you are the one being blamed. That you should, "know better" or have brought it on yourself to be dating the wrong guy."

For a long time I was dating a guy with who had all of the signs of being a stalker. However when I acted on dumping him and not speaking to him, I was perceived as being a "bitch" or imagining or a drama queen. I almost lost a friendship over it as well.

People do not want to know of things like this-to them they are MUCH happier thinking that it only happens to "stupid sluts who are asking for it", instead of it being possibly their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, cousins, daughters, wives and friends."

It hits far too close to home.

wow. thanks for the link. I had to stop reading 1/3 of the way through but will finish it later after the word stops reverberating in my head.

at 12 I didn't report being raped because rape trials on TV were presented as so horribly grueling on and blaming of the victim. it's horrifying to know that I actually was not too young for a judge to have blamed me for the assault--here I thought I had been tragically mistaken. :(
