Two Women "No Longer Quivering"
I've been up all night reading in fascination about the lives of two women, Vyckie and Laura, who spent years in the "Quiverfull" movement and finally broke free. They started a blog entitled "No Longer Quivering" There is also a Salon article about Vyckie.

I am amazed at the parallels (which I've noticed before) between life as a fundamentalist Christian woman (of the most extreme variety) and life as a Hare Krishna woman. Patriarchy looks the same no matter what the cultural trappings one wraps around it.

I have never heard of this movement, and am reading the article/blog. I have been reading 'God'sBrothel' too, about Fundamentalist Mormon women who escaped from the lives they were living on remote compounds. . . . .all of this sickens me.

Yes it's amazing that patriarchy can maintain such footholds in spite of all feminist efforts.

I watched something on PBS a while back, on "Purity Balls". . . those virginity-focused dinner/dance/pledge evenings that fathers take their daughters to. I found it disturbing.
All the pressure on the girls to maintain their virginity. . . yet nothing addressing the sons and their attitudes. The father's keen interest in their daughters virginity made me kind of sick. . . . another patriarchal program to control the sexuality of the women in their lives.
