With thanks to Jessi: Language and 9/11
Today I've been watching the coverage of 9/11, something I haven't done much of in the past few years because it felt too raw. On that day I was in the hospital and Dave called to tell me what happened. I'd returned to the hospital with chest pain following my release after heart surgery. It turned out I had inflammation around the heart and fluid built up. In any event, I was sleeping because I'd been up half the night with pain. He called me at 9:25 a.m. PDT. The towers had already collapsed and the basics were known at that point. Everyone in the hospital was talking about it. Today was the first time I got to see it unfold as it would have if I'd been awake from the beginning.

In any event, after seeing MSNBC's coverage (which consisted of the Today Show's original broadcast on that morning) I found this link via my friend Jessi about how 9/11 has been used on both sides: http://www.tinyrevolution.com/mt/archives/000611.html

Scroll down just a little bit to the 2005 entry.

It's all in line with that bit the Daily Show did recently on language and the Bush Administration. Or for that matter, George Orwell and 1984.

I wish I'd seen the Today Show repeat. I'd purposefully left the tv off - and wish I hadn't. Preston and I were up that morning ... but were ... uh ... involved ... and didn't know what was going on until around 9:30, iirc.

check the schedule, maybe they'll replay it. also the History channel was running something along those lines too but I didn't check it out. It also may be available in dvd or on youtube? Or MSNBC site?

Yeah, thanks for the reminder about THC. I don't know that Preston will want to watch, but I know I do.

Thanks, Tapati.

I have still not ever seen video of the crash or the jumpers, and I don't want to. I even avoided seeing still photos for months. Just reading about the event or hearing about it on the radio was more than enough for me. I couldn't see the point of stimulating more horror or despair in myself. Given your medical challenges at that time, I'm *glad* you didn't see it right then.

If you're in need of an astringent correction to the oily, cynical opportunists who twist tragedy for their own ends, Noam Chomsky (http://www.chomsky.info/) is always a good bet. He's a linguist, and he specializes in deconstructing doublespeak from the powers that be.

Oh and thanks to mariadkins for the NBC link. There are some interesting stories there of people helping each other amidst the chaos.
