The Patriarchy Strikes Back

As the Goddess-centered faiths collided with the God-centric faiths, scriptures came to reflect the clash. Here are some more quotes by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, my former spiritual master:

SB=Srimad Bhagavatam
BG=Bhagavad Gita and/or purports to BG verses

Many references deal with wombs and women who are prone to be misled and who will produce varna-sankara (unauthorized, unwanted progeny who will be a problem to society). Bg 1.40, SB 1.5.24, 1.8.5, 1.9.27, 1.11.36,

or the fact that women are "lowborn", like 2.4.18

or women as undesirable association, 4.31.1

or that women need to be protected, 5.2.21, because otherwise there will be varna-sankara population

or again 7.11.13, when women become polluted.....

SB 7.11.13 p
The whole purpose of this system is to create good population. As stated in Bhagavad-gita, when women are polluted the populace is varna-sankara, and when the varna-sankara population increases, the situation of the entire world becomes hellish. Therefore, all the Vedic literatures strongly warn against creating varna-sankara population. When there is varna-sankara population, the people cannot be properly controlled for peace and prosperity, regardless of great legislative assemblies, parliaments and similar bodies.

SB 7.11.25 p
It is very important for peaceful householder life that a woman follow the vow of her husband. Any disagreement with the husband's vow will disrupt family life. In this regard, Canakya Pandita gives a very valuable instruction: dampatyoh kalaho nasti tatra srih svayam agatah. When there are no fights between husband and wife, the goddess of fortune automatically comes to the home. A woman's education should be conducted along the lines indicated in this verse. The basic principle for a chaste woman is to be always favorably disposed toward her husband. In Bhagavad-gita (1.40) it is said, strisu dustasu varsneya jayate varna-sankarah: if the women are polluted, there will be varna-sankara population. In modern terms, the varna-sankara are the hippies, who do not follow any regulative injunctions. Another explanation is that when the population is varna-sankara, no one can know who is on what platform. The varnasrama system scientifically divides society into four varnas and four asramas, but in varna-sankara society there are no such distinctions, and no one can know who is who. In such a society, no one can distinguish between a brahmana, a ksatriya, a vaisya and a sudra. For peace and happiness in the material world, the varnasrama institution must be introduced. The symptoms of one's activities must be defined, and one must be educated accordingly. Then spiritual advancement will automatically be possible.

[No Freedom for Women]
According to the Manu-samhita, a woman should never be given freedom. When she is not under the protection of her husband, she must be under the protection of her sons. Women cannot properly utilize freedom, and it is better for them to remain dependent. A woman cannot be happy if she is independent. That is a fact. In Western countries we have seen many women very unhappy simply for the sake of independence. That independence is not recommended by the Vedic civilization or by the varnasrama-dharma.

TLK: Chapter Three The Most Intelligent Woman
According to these references women, sudras, and dvija-bandhus are considered to belong to the same category.

Actually, however, there is a great plan for everything-the Vedic plan. The Vedic literature gives directions regarding how men and women should unite, how they should beget children, and what the purpose of sex life is. Krsna says in the Bhagavad-gita that sex life sanctioned by the Vedic order, or sex life under the direction of the Vedic rules and regulations, is bona fide and is acceptable to Him. But chance sex life is not acceptable. If by chance one is sexually attracted and there are children, they are called varna-sankara, unwanted population. That is the way of the lower animals;

Bhagavad-gita 1.40--London, July 28, 1973
[Lusty Women produce varna-sankaras]
So she, the woman became very much sexually excited and the husband replied that: "This is not time. This is very bad time, evening. Why you are insisting?" But she was too much lusty, and because the husband was obliged, Hiranyakasipu was born, a demon was born. Therefore there is Garbhadhana samskara, to find out when the husband and wife should mix and give birth to a child. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita you'll see that sex life which is according to the principle of religious ideas, that is "I am." So sex life is not bad, provided it is executed according to the religious principles. So Garbhadhana samskara... Just, what is the idea? The idea is the child born must be first class. He'll be able to become Krsna conscious. He'll be able to understand the sastras, the Vedas. He must have the good brain. These were the ideas. But if they are not born in that way, like cats and dog, that is called varna-sankara. Varna-sankara. You cannot specify whether he's a brahmana or a ksatriya and vaisya and sudra. That is called varna-sankara. So varna-sankara population is not good. Varna-sankara. No caste. No designation, no definition to which class this man belongs.

Bhagavad-gita 2.10--London, August 16, 1973
What Arjuna has said, that varna-sankara, when the women become polluted, the population is varna-sankara, that is fact. Whatever Arjuna has said to Krsna in order to avoid the fighting, so those things are correct.

Bhagavad-gita 2.13--Hyderabad, November 19, 1972
[women, prostitution and varna-sankara]
These questions are very nice. If women become prostitute, then the population is varna-sankara. And varna-sankara means unwanted children. They become practically nuisance in the society. Narakayate. If varna-sankara population is increased, then the whole society becomes a hell. That's a fact. Actually, that is the position at the present moment. Therefore, according to the Vedic system, marriage is there. Without marriage, the population, increase of population, means varna-sankara.

Bhagavad-gita 9.29-32--New York, December 20, 1966
[Less intelligent women]
Because in India, according to the caste system, or varnasrama-dharma, the brahmana and ksatriyas are considered to be the highest in the society, and the vaisyas, a little less than them, and sudras, they are not taken into account. In the similarly, woman class, they are taken as sudra, sudra. Just like the thread ceremony is given to the brahmana, ksatriya, vaisya, but there is no thread ceremony for the woman class. Although the woman is born in the brahmana family, she has no that reformation. Because striyah, woman class, are taken less intelligent, they should be given protection, but they cannot be elevated.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.13--Los Angeles, August 16, 1972
[Supporting polygamy]
Yesterday on the beach I was talking with Karandhara, "Why your country does not allow to marry more than one wife?" He said they think it is immoral. I do not know what is the ethics or psychology behind it, but giving opportunity for the girls to become prostitute is not immoral? To marry more than one wife is immoral? You see your leaders. This is the leaders. Why? Because there is no varnasrama-dharma, they do not know. The brahmanas, the ksatriyas, especially, they are allowed to marry more than one wife. At least every woman will get a chance to have a husband.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.43-- Vrndavana, October 3, 1976
Therefore, especially I have seen in the Western countries, there is no home practically. There is no homely happiness, because women are allowed to mix freely and there is no protection. They are not married, there is no husband. The father also does not take care. As soon as the girl becomes fifteen, sixteen years, she goes away. Therefore I have practically seen there is no home, there is no peace in the Western countries. These are very important things, that soft-hearted woman, vama-svabhava, they should be given protection. They should be trained up how to become faithful wife, affectionate mother. Then the home will be very happy, and without happiness we cannot make any spiritual progress. We must be peaceful. This is the preliminary condition. Therefore, as far as possible, the Vedic injunction is there should be division in the society, varnasrama.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.34--Bombay, October 14, 1974
Just like in Western countries there is no such thing as varna and asrama. Therefore the varna-saìkara, the hippies... That is varna-sankara. So varna-sankara... In the Bhagavad-gita... If the varna-sankara increases, strisu dustasu varna-sankaro jayate. When women become polluted, no fixed-up husband-that is pollution for woman, no chaste, no chastity-then this varna-sankara will come out. And when the world is overpopulated by varna-sankara, it will become a burden. Therefore it so became, atheist, varna-sankara, demons.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.16.12--Los Angeles, January 9, 1974
If the woman becomes widow, then there will be varna-sankara population. Varna-sankara population means a population who cannot say who is his father. That is varna-sankara. Or which caste does he belong, what is his father, what is his family. No, nothing, no information. That is called varna-sankara.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.1.10--Dallas, May 21, 1973
[Polygamy again]
And Hindus, especially the higher class, brahmanas and ksatriya, polygamy is allowed. Now they have made laws. But that is quite natural. If every woman has to be married, then polygamy must be there. Otherwise how every woman is going to get a husband? Because male population is always shorter than the female population.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.25.5-6--Bombay, November 5, 1974
[No Freedom for the Girls]
Women should be under the protection. In the Manu-samhita it is said that woman should not be given freedom. Na stri svatantryam arhati. They cannot properly utilize freedom. It is better to remain dependent. That is very good. Independent woman cannot be happy. That's a fact. We have seen in the Western countries, on, in the name of independence, so many women are unhappy. So that is not recommended in the Vedic civilization and on the varnasrama-dharma........

Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.8--Vrndavana, October 30, 1976
to cut down this attraction between male and female. This is the big plan. Otherwise there is no need of the varnasrama. Varnasrama means to train the candidates gradually to become free from this entanglement of man and woman. This is the basic principle.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.17--Vrndavana, November 5, 1976
[Great Fun Definition of varna-sankara]
Yoni means mother, and bija means father. Bija may be nice, but if the yoni is not nice, that is called varna-sankara. These are the things. Yatha bijam tatha yoni. Therefore they must be equally qualified. Anyway, so papa-yoni, born in the womb of a low-class yoni.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.1.31--San Francisco, July 16, 1975
Therefore human civilization must be very careful that the women may not become polluted.

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila 7.108--San Francisco, February 18, 1967
So God is never woman. The foolish person who says that God is, can be worshiped as woman, as mother... No. That is not according to Vedic literature. God is always father. Therefore Bible is all right-conception of father, not mother. Not that "I worship Kali, goddess mother, and become God." These are all nonsense. He's always father, purusa. Everywhere we find purusa. Never we find that God is a female. No. God cannot be female. Female is energy. Just like Radha and Krsna. Radha is Krsna, but the energy of Krsna, pleasure potency of Krsna. There is no difference between Radha and Krsna, and still, Krsna is male and Radha is female. So God, conception of God, always...

Lecture at World Health Organization--Geneva, June 6, 1974
If the women are not married, then varna-sankara population will increase. It is said. And as soon as there is varna-sankara population, the whole world will be in chaotic condition.

Morning Walk--June 8, 1974, Geneva
When there is irreligious sex, then it increases varna-sankara, unwanted population. So the modern civilization, they're letting loose the women for prostitution, and they want nice children. That is not possible.

Interview with Trans-India Magazine--July 17, 1976, New York
So actually this varnasrama system is meant for bringing the man in the lower status of life to the higher status of life. It doesn't matter one is born in a low-grade family. That is also said by Krsna: mam hi partha vyapasritya ye 'pi syuh papa-yonayah. Papa-yoni, lower grade. Striyo vaisyas tatha sudrah. In the human society, woman, the vaisya and the sudra, they are considered in the lower status, not very intelligent.

Letter to: Madhukara-Bombay 4 January, 1973
And being the weaker sex, women require to have a husband who is strong in Krsna consciousness so that they may take advantage and make progress by sticking tightly to his feet.
