Guns vs Mental Health Care Access
guns vs mental health care access

Says it all, really. Even if you have money you can't force an adult family member to get help. The law forbids it unless you can PROVE they are a danger to themselves and others.

ETA: I am Adam Lanza's Mother A heart-wrenching story of a mother coping with an intermittently violent son who has been diagnosed with a number of things. Though she has a job to keep benefits she has received no effective help from the mental health care system and long term placements other than jail don't seem to exist any more.

So true. After finding out after the fact what my cousin went through with his mental illness in the two years before he killed himself, it's clear there's so much more that could be done.

I agree with what you've been saying about publicizing the massacres. It seems like this is happening more frequently, and it's not like gun laws are becoming more lax... it's the publicity that drives it, to some extent. I mean, if it were me and a family member of mine were affected by this, I'd want them to just leave me alone. How does having reporters cover it help anybody?

The only positive I can see is possible stricter gun control laws. But the NRA lobby is so damn powerful, that will never happen. It makes me so angry. In terms of the vast majority of citizens defending themselves, why would you ever need a rifle that can fire off dozens of shots without reloading?

I've been trying not to read about this, but why did the shooter's mother have such powerful weapons?

No one has answered that question yet that I can see. I don't know whether she was a gun enthusiast who perhaps went target shooting regularly or what. I know from my own family that when someone in your family or even extended family is mentally ill your guns should be kept locked up. My mom took my aunt's gun and was going to kill herself. My aunt called me when she discovered it missing and asked me to get it from my mom's room while she talked to my mom and kept her distracted. My mom had been taking care of her pets while she was away.

I wonder if my mom would have shot me as well since she admitted later she'd thought about killing us both when I was a child.

I think I heard that he actually may have simply purchased the weapons in her name, so who knows if she even knew about the guns.

I am hoping that this incident is so horrific that it will force stricter gun control. I know there have been many similar shootings, but this is the first that ever made me want to donate a large chunk of money to gun control. And since Obama doesn't have to worry about reelection, he can do the right thing. (I am confident what Obama believes is the right thing coincides with what I believe is the right thing. I have never been so glad Romney lost.)

Yes this has tipped me over the edge into donating to gun control advocates. Normally I prioritize food banks and other charities aimed at poor people's basic needs or women's shelters.

I am hoping that you'll be able to get coverage when the last of the affordable care act kicks in! But what a society we'd have if mental health services were free for anyone who can't pay.

I suspect there's going to be a showdown over governors who do that. I don't know how it'll shake out but I think their other federal funds will be held hostage...

and yeah, having access does not always mean quality access--Kaiser tends to put people in groups and you see your therapist once a month, to keep their costs down. Not optimum for me, not at all.

Yes, our whole mental health care system needs an overhaul.
